100 fontane for Africa

In Burundi, one of the poorest countries on earth, Fantini has promoted and financed the construction of the water main in the hilly area of Masango, which today brings clean water to about 25,000 people.

The project to build the water main in Burundi started at the end of 2012 and was completed at the end of 2014, after two years of intense work that led to the construction of 12 water ‘captage’ sources directly in the rock, 27 kilometres of piping and 100 fountains, drinking water collection points, located at a maximum distance of about ten minutes’ walk from the houses of the villages.

During the course of the project, 30 more fountains were added to the 100 initially planned. This was made possible thanks to the success of the commercial initiative launched by the company, which involved the sales force and customers around the world, allocating to the project the profits from the sale of the ‘I Balocchi’ series, a historical icon of the company that was reissued for the occasion. The initiative received an extraordinary response and a total of 130 fountains were created.
Each fountain has a name in Kirundi and a local person has been appointed to look after and maintain it.
It has not been an easy project, but one full of challenges. The morphology of the terrain made it difficult to transport the materials, there is no infrastructure and identifying the best points for ‘capturing’ the water from the rock was complicated, due to the rains and landslides that slowed down the work and required constant inspections and changes during construction compared to what had been planned on paper.

Thanks to the 100 fountains project, easy access to drinking water is now a tangible benefit for the entire community of Masango a fact that allows children to attend school, with all the positive consequences this will have for their future.
